Scoring Criteria

Scoring of the Ethics and Boundaries Essay Examination is based on the relevance and thoroughness of your response to the essay scenarios.  Content and expression of ideas are more heavily weighted in the grading than grammar, punctuation, or spellingHowever, you are encouraged to write using complete sentences when composing your essay responses

You will be allowed a maximum of 60 minutes to compose a typewritten response for each scenario.

Passing scores are derived from meeting the criteria established for point assignments using the following:

I. INTRODUCTORY OPINION STATEMENTS

4 pts: Outstanding
  • Comprehensive and relevant opinion statements regarding the ethical or boundary issue(s) related to the scenario and the assigned focus.
3 pts: Sufficient to Pass
  • Basic, yet relevant, opinion statements regarding the ethical or boundary issue(s) related to the scenario and the assigned focus.
2 pts: Insufficient to Pass
  • Nonspecific or unclear opinion statements regarding the ethical or boundary issue(s) related to the scenario and the assigned focus.
1 pt: Extremely Insufficient
  • Inappropriate, irrelevant, or unprofessional opinion statements regarding the ethical or boundary issue(s) related to the scenario and the assigned focus.
0 pt:
  • No response or does not relate to the scenario and the assigned focus.

II. CONSEQUENCES

4 pts: Outstanding
  • Comprehensive, relevant, and clearly-stated consequences; and
  • When applicable, consequences address appropriate concerns for all involved parties.
3 pts: Sufficient to Pass
  • Basic, yet relevant, consequences; and
  • When applicable, consequences address appropriate concerns for all involved parties.
2 pts: Insufficient to Pass
  • Nonspecific or unclear consequences; yet,
  • When applicable, consequences are addressed, but may lack appropriate concerns for all involved parties.
1 pt: Extremely Insufficient
  • Inappropriate, irrelevant, or unprofessional consequences; and,
  • Lacks appropriate concerns for involved parties.
0 pt:
  • No response or does not offer consequences, when applicable, to involved parties.

III. SOLUTIONS

4 pts: Outstanding
  • Comprehensive, relevant, and clearly-stated solutions; and
  • Addresses professional responsibilities and actions.
3 pts: Sufficient to Pass
  • Basic, yet relevant, solutions; and
  • Addresses professional responsibilities and actions.
2 pts: Insufficient to Pass
  • Nonspecific or unclear solutions; yet
  • Attempts to address professional responsibilities and actions.
1 pt: Extremely Insufficient
  • Inappropriate, irrelevant or unprofessional solutions; yet
  • Attempts to address professional responsibilities and actions.
0 pt:
  • No response or does not address the individual’s professional responsibilities and actions.

IV. PUBLIC PROTECTION

4 pts: Outstanding
  • Comprehensive, relevant, and clearly-stated discussions of how the licensee’s actions compromise the community’s safety and welfare; and
  • Provides several reasons why these actions are considered to be an ethical violation.
3 pts: Sufficient to Pass
  • Basic, yet comprehensive, relevant discussions of how the licensee’s actions compromise the community’s safety and welfare; and
  • Address several reasons why actions are considered to be an ethical violation.
2 pts: Insufficient to Pass
  • Nonspecific or unclear statements regarding the discussion of how the licensee’s actions compromise the community’s safety and welfare; and,
  • When applicable, community safety and welfare is addressed, but may not identify reasons as to why actions are considered to be an ethical violation.
1 pt: Extremely Insufficient
  • Inappropriate, irrelevant, or unprofessional statements regarding the discussion of how the licensee’s actions compromise the community’s safety and welfare; and,
  • Lacks appropriate explanation or provide reasons why actions are considered to be an ethical violation.
0 pt:
  • No response or does not provide reasons for how and why the licensee’s actions compromise the community’s safety and welfare.
